With a population of 16,500 Sigmaringen has the function of a regional center and serves as a location for the district administration, the district hospital, the state archive, the administrative and district court and other authorities.

The business location of Sigmaringen has a large number of innovative medium-sized companies that are very successful and sometimes even global market leaders. Particularly noteworthy are the companies Schaefer (elevator technology), Eisele (pump production and production of agricultural vehicles), Guhring (production of tools for drilling tools) and Kaut (plastic parts).

Due to its location in the Danube valley as well as in the Upper Danube Nature Park and due to nationally known attractions such as Sigmaringen Castle and the Danube Cycle Path, tourism also has a high economic significance for the city of Sigmaringen. The development of overnight stays in recent years has been extremely positive.

Landmark of the city and one of the tourist attractions of the region is the castle Sigmaringen with annually approx. 80,000 visitors. The castle can be visited all year round. The side wing was until recently still personally inhabited by the princess and the prince of Hohenzollern. The city gains attractiveness for both tourists and guests as a holiday destination and shopping city.
